Superstitious Beliefs Sometimes, individuals with schizotypal personality disorder are superstitious or preoccupied with paranormal phenomena that are outside what would be expected in their culture. They may think they have special powers or magical control over others (such as thinking the reason their co-worker is leaving early is that they wished an illness upon them). They may also believe their behavior prevents a harmful outcome, such as thinking that they can prevent bad things from happening by placing an object in a certain place. They may experience perceptual alternations, such as hearing someone mumbling their name or sensing that a spirit is present. Their speech may be vague or incoherent at times. They may use strange phrases or talk in a way that confuses others. Strange Behavior They might also appear constricted and show little emotion during their interactions. They may have unusual mannerisms, such as an unkempt manner of dress. An individual with this disorder may wear ill-fitting clothing or bizarre clothing combinations (winter boots with shorts) and may be unable to participate in the normal give-and-take of a conversation. They may occasionally express sadness over their lack of close relationships but their behavior suggests they have little desire for close connections. They often interact with people when they have to but prefer to keep to themselves. They might also experience transient psychotic episodes during times of extreme stress (lasting minutes to hours) but they do not have regular hallucinations or delusions (such as in the case with schizophrenia). When Is Magical Thinking a Symptom of Mental Illness? DSM-5 Diagnostic Criteria According to the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, symptoms must begin by early adulthood. In order to meet the criteria for a diagnosis, individuals must experience at least five of the following symptoms: Ideas of reference (incorrect interpretations of causal incidents or events as having an unusual meaning specifically for the person)Odd beliefs or magical thinking that influences behavior and is inconsistent with subcultural normsUnusual perceptual experiences, including bodily illusionsOdd thinking and speechSuspiciousness and paranoid ideationInappropriate and constricted affectBehavior or appearance that is odd, eccentric, or peculiarLack of close friends or confidants other than first-degree relativesExcessive social anxiety that does not diminish with familiarity and tends to be associated with paranoid fears rather than negative judgments about oneself The symptoms may begin during childhood or adolescence. There isn’t a single known cause for schizotypal personality disorder. It appears there is a strong genetic component, however. Individuals with first-degree biological relatives with schizophrenia are more likely to have a schizotypal personality disorder. Diagnosis A mental health professional can diagnose a schizotypal personality disorder. Like all personality disorders, a clinician must take into account what type of impairments are caused by the symptoms. Someone who is eccentric with few friends doesn’t necessarily have a schizotypal personality disorder. In order to meet the criteria for a diagnosis, the symptoms must interfere with a person’s social, occupational, or educational functioning. There isn’t a test that determines whether someone has a personality disorder. Instead, a clinician will conduct a thorough interview that gathers the history of the symptoms and assesses the impairments. The clinician also observes the individual throughout the interview to look for signs of the condition. Assessment tools may be used as part of the diagnostic process. The individual may be given a questionnaire to complete or may be asked to answer specific diagnostic questions. Sometimes, close family members are interviewed as well. Ruling out Other Disorders Before a diagnosis can be made, a clinician must rule out other disorders that can cause someone to exhibit symptoms that appear similar to the symptoms of schizotypal personality disorder. Schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, psychotic disorders, neurodevelopmental disorders, and other personality disorders may be confused with a schizotypal personality disorder because they have certain features in common. Treatment Like other personality disorders, there is no cure for schizotypal personality disorder. Like all personality disorders, the symptoms are likely to persist throughout the life span. That doesn’t mean you can’t reduce the severity of the symptoms or improve your functioning, however. Over half of individuals with schizotypal personality disorder may have a history of at least one depressive episode. Sometimes, individuals seek treatment for their depression, rather than the symptoms related to their personality disorder. Treatment for schizotypal personality disorder may include a combination of psychotherapy and medication. Psychotherapy may include cognitive-behavioral therapy to address distorted thinking patterns and to teach specific social skills. It may also help address problematic behavior. Family therapy may also be used to help family members understand the symptoms and to assist in helping everyone communicate better and support the individual. While there isn’t a specific drug used to treat schizotypal personality disorder, medications may be used to address depression, anxiety, or psychotic symptoms. Understanding the Appeal to Force Fallacy

The appeal to force fallacy is a rhetorical fallacy that relies on force or intimidation (scare tactics) to persuade an audience to accept a proposition or take a particular course of action. Understanding the Fallacy In Latin, the appeal to force fallacy is referred to as argumentum ad baculum, or, literally, argument to the cudgel. Its also sometimes referred to as the appeal to fear fallacy. Essentially, the argument appeals to the possibility of undesired, negative consequences that are often - though not always - tied to some sort of frightening or violent outcome that listeners will wish to avoid. In arguments that utilize this fallacy, the logic is not sound, nor is it the sole basis of the argument. Instead, there is an appeal to negative emotions and possibilities that have not been proven. Fear and logic become tied together in the argument. The fallacy occurs when a negative consequence is assumed without definitive proof; instead, an appeal is made to the possibility of the consequence and a false or exaggerated assumption is made. This fallacious argument may be made whether or not the person making the argument truly subscribes to their own argument. For instance, consider two factions at war. The leader of Faction A sends a message to their counterpart in Faction B, requesting a parlay to discuss the possibility of negotiating peace. During the war so far, Faction A has treated captives from Faction B reasonably well. Leader B, however, tells their second-in-command that they must not meet with Leader A because Faction A will turn around and brutally kill them all. Here, the evidence is that Faction A conducts themselves with honor and would not break the terms of the temporary truce, but Leader B discredits this because he is afraid of being killed. Instead, he appeals to that shared fear to convince the rest of Faction B that he is correct, despite the fact that his belief and current evidence are in conflict with each other. There is a non-fallacious variation of this argument, however. Lets say that Person X, who is a member of Group Y, lives under an oppressive regime. X knows that, if the regime discovers they are a member of Group Y, they will be put to death. X wants to live. Therefore, X will claim to not be a member of Group Y. This is not a fallacious conclusion, since it only says that X will claim to not be part of Y, not that X is not part of Y. Examples and Observations This kind of appeal is undoubtedly persuasive in certain circumstances. The robber who threatens a persons life will probably win the argument. The argument distracts us from a critical review and evaluation of its premises and conclusion by putting us into a defensive position. . . .But appeals to force are not always physical threats. In Plato’s Crito and Antigone by Sophocles, both Socrates and Antigone face a dilemma about whether it is worth violating the law no matter how unjust or unfair it can get. Although some may claim that violating the law is wrong because it is our duty as citizens to obey the law, I claim that complying with immoral laws is wrong because it corrupts and defeats the justice system. Antigone, a young girl playing the main character in the play Antigone by Sophocles, faces the death sentence for committing a crime. King Kreon, the prosecutor at the trial and King of the city decides that one of her brothers is a traitor while the other is an honored man, without any real reason. He had a heavy gash on his right arm and his nose was bleeding. Still. The girl stayed still, unmoving as a statue in a garden. Her face almost death like and as pale as a white sheet of paper. Her bright, vast, ginger bob of curls heavily contrasted with this strange and ghostly complexion. Her eyes, piercing like the rays of a bright sun. Her jaw, fully agape as though it were an opening into a mysterious cavern. Her shirt was slashed across the torso and her underwear lay exposed due to this. Great slashes lay from her upper arm right down to her wrist. The boys had entwined their arms around that of the girl’s and seemed to be making a great effort to sustain her in a sedentary position. At this moment in time, Helen decided to turn her face away from this ghastly, frightening sight towards the other side of the carriage. She really didn’t understand why these strange beings that she was trying to get away from had followed her into the new carriage. However, she then spotted a man that looked officious but overpowering at the same time moving over towards the seat next to her. By now Helen was really starting to lose her calm and collected aura.Suddenly,he started mumbling something but Helen felt that this was just another unfamiliar being that was just trying to get her attention. Sir Gawain And Green Knight Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is justifiably an allegory. An allegory is a narrative constructed by representing general concepts (Sin, Despair, and God) as persons. Many characters in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight have features that represent general concepts. Sir Gawain and the Green Knight can be interpreted allegorically by reviewing the characteristics and features of Gawain, the Green Knight, the Fair Lady, and the events that link the characters together. Some of the allegorical features found in the characters are obvious. The character Sir Gawain has the most obvious allegorical features within the poem. Sir Gawain is more than a knight; he represents "everyman" on a quest. During the late 1300's noble men displayed five classical virtues--brotherly love, good manners, compassion, open-mindedness, and beneficence. One can interpret Gawain's imperfectness as "everyman's sins". This idea becomes clear when Gawain states, "My journey is to judgment surely". Gawain represents "everyman" on a quest because at the end of every quest one receives judgment. Each mistake that Gawain makes represents man's sins. At the end of Sir Gawain's journey to find the Green Knight he is judged by the Green Knight. Gawain's reply to the Green Knight supports the idea of Gawain facing judgment. "Met my master on a mountainside, where he invested in me the honor and the emblem of an imperfect man." In addition, this reply by Gawain suggests that the Green Knight represents God. The Green Knight represents God in many different ways. The first and most obvious feature of God that the Green Knight represents is his judging Sir Gawain. Like God, the Green Knight sets Gawain out on a journey filled with temptations and challenges. The Green Knight tests Gawain's courage, honor, and strength during the three days at the Castle Hautdesert. Each day at the castle Gawain faces a temptation (the Fair Lady) and a challenge (the hunt). During his stay at the castle, Gawain receives three kisses from the Fair Lady. At Gawain's judgment, the Green Knight reveals his knowledge of the incident to Gawain. This is shown when the Green Knight says to Gawain, "You kissed my comely wife...I know well the tale...And the wooing of my wife--it was all my scheme...She made a trial of a man most faultless by far." The Green Knight, much like God, tests mankind's honor and loyalty. Gawain fails his test by committing the sin of adultery, and for his sin he will receive three blows. The three blows that Gawain receives represent all people repenting their sins. Lastly, the Green Knight acts like God by allowing Gawain to live despite his sins of adultery and deception. Gawain not only commits adultery, but he also tries to deceive the Green Knight by wearing the invulnerable green girdle. The girdle makes Gawain invincible and free from the harm of the Green Knight's axe. By wearing the armor, Gawain is cheating himself of God's fate. God may want Gawain to die for his sins in the chapel, but by wearing the green armor Gawain is denying his chosen fate. Despite all of this, the Green Knight lets Sir Gawain exchange the green girdle for his life. Even though the Fair Lady acts as temptation, she is representative of something else. The Fair Lady represents not only "temptation", but the fox as well. Like a fox she is, cunning and deceptive. The Fair Lady uses her slyness and wits to manipulate and seduce Sir Gawain. The fox uses its cunning personality to elude hunters, making for a great hunt. The Fair Lady is much like the fox in the way she is able to cleverly answer each one of Gawain's replies and persuade him into accepting the green girdle. The fox is not a great prize in itself, but the honor that it stands for is priceless. To hunt and kill a fox shows great skills and smarts. It is the ultimate hunt, not because of the prize, but because of the chase. This is the same with the Fair Lady and her striking beauty. She is beautiful and smart, and to woo such a lady is a great accomplishment. The Fair Lady represents both "temptation" and "achievement". Attack The Source There really is no way of getting around it. There is a great deal of racial tension in the United States today. Nine out of ten people in society today believe that racism does exist and is something that affects millions of people everyday. There is not much arguing that can done with a statistic like that. What is it that causes so many problems between each other? Is it that we are afraid of the unknown? Whatever the cause is, we have been trying to fix the problem for many years now. Since racism is learned and not genetic, it is something that needs to be taken care of in school starting from the young children. In Brown v. Board of Education, the whole issue was that schools could be segregated only if they were â€Å"equal†. This was decided by the case of Plessy v Ferguson. Schools in the South were not equal so Brown v. Board of Education was filed. Supreme Court Judge Earl Warren decide with the rest of the Supreme Court that segregated schools were in fact unlawful. Schools went through drastic changes but some schools didn’t like the idea. Schools in Prince Edward County had closed due to the ruling and children in the county lost out on their education. This had caused some racism to occur in Prince Edward County. The most effective solution for solving the racial tension problem is to change the curriculum, text books, and to keep up, if not increase, diversity training in the work force today. First of all, there needs to be an agreement that a problem does exist. It is after all evident through racist groups such as the Ku Klux Klan, Neo-Nazis, and Skinheads. These are hate groups that threaten and dislike people, not for the content of their character, but the color of their skin or what country they are from. although these are extremes when it comes to racism, it is something that affects so many people everyday in the United States. What is racism really? Racism is not knowing anything about someone when you look at them, but disliking them anyway, not because of who they are, but what they are. Racism is cowardly. More importantly, racism is a weakness and an obvious sign of ignorance. So what is it that makes us racist? More than likely, it is the fear of the unknown. In other words, it is a lack of education. The only way to battle this ignorance is to educate oneself. That is why the key to so... ...nor, what would he do? He replied, "I would probably die!" This was the straw that broke the camel's back because a friendship of sixteen years ended at that moment. Parents are the biggest influence in a child's life. Children look to their parents for support and guidance. Without the proper support and guidance, children are headed on a road to nowhere. Racism is not something that will just disappear. But it is possible to minimize it if we keep it under control. Yes we can still teach about unity and equality in our schools, but if we don't attack racism where it begins, then those school programs won't be of any value. Not all children will fall into the category that my former friend fell into. Many children grow up in racist households. My friend was a prime example of someone who couldn't climb the wall of racism but there are many children out there who climb the wall of bigamy every day. The problem of racism isn't a permanent problem. Racism is like a cancer, if it is caught early enough it could be treated but if it is caught too late it could be deadly. Therefore we must attack racism from its source, the household, before it is too late.

DiscussionDiabetes Mellitus (DM) is a clinical syndrome characterized by the deficiency or insensitivity of the body to insulin, and exposure of organs to chronic hyperglycemia is the most common medical complication of the disease (DeCherney and Nathan, 2002 p. 326). There are three known types of DM, namely (1) Type-1 or Insulin-Dependent DM (IDDM), (2) Type-2 o r Non-insulin-Dependent DM (NDDM), and (3) Gestational DM (GDM). According to Marso and Stern (2003), these three types of DM are all characterized by the increased sugar levels in the blood (hyperglycemia); however, these are differentiated by their nature of occurrence and etiology.Type-1 occurs due to the genetically impaired insulin receptor that prevents the insulin from binding to these receptors that provide the necessary signal for glucose cellular absorption. Type 2 occurs as a product of acquired metabolic impairment, particularly obesity, that also impairs the binding between insulin and cellular receptors due to extensive distribution of fats. Lastly, GDM occurs during pregnancy as a product of bodily modification, specifically carbohydrate intolerance, on the pregnant mother’s body (Montella, Keely and Lee, 2008 p. 216).These three types of DM are the most commonly known cases; however, a rare type of DM, known as GDM, also occurs to few people. According to Gill (2004), the case of GDM is similar to the manifestations of Type-1 DM although, with increased severity and frequency of occurrence (p. 11). Woodyatt in 1934 uses the term â€Å"brittle† to describe the main characteristic of the disease, which is the oscillation or instantaneous variations of glucose levels. According to mortality rates, the highest prone group is between 25 to 64 years (45%), followed by 65 to 74 age group (22%) and the youngest group of 16 to 44 (16.7%). Patient experiencing this rare DM condition can experience multiple types of severe symptoms, specifically (1) ketoacidosis, (2) hypoglycemia, and (3) hyperglycemia. In the case of BDM, the occurrence of hyperglycemia and/or hypoglycemia can be very sudden and extreme in levels, which consequently makes diagnosis almost impossible due to the unpredictability of its manifestations. Ketoacidosis occurs during an extreme drop of insulin levels in the body that consequently increases blood sugar contents in t he body making it thick in consistency (Backer, 2005 p. 201).In addition, ketoacidosis occurs in a very unstable levels and unpredictable frequency. BDM can be very hard to control due to the severe swings on blood sugar levels. Medical practitioners commonly advice exercise, careful monitoring of diet and blood glucose levels at least every 30 minutes for the first 5 hours of BDM manifestations (Ballanoff, Yu and Stjernholm, 2004 p. 132). Signs and symptoms that need to be carefully monitored are fruity breath, dehydration, increased thirst, severe and instantaneous weight loss due to muscle wasting and increased frequency of urination (polyuria).Meanwhile, severe complications that can result include (1) kidney damage due to nephropathy, (2) hypertension and heart damages (e. g. Cardiomegaly, Cardiac arrest, etc. ), (3) eye damage (e. g. glaucoma, cataracts, retinopathy, etc. ), (4) diabetic neuropathy affecting nerve functioning that eventually leads to leg and feet necrosis, GI peristaltic-related indigestion and impotence (erectile dysfunction), and (5) series of life-threatening conditions, such as hyperlipidemia, atherosclerosis and diabetic coma (Ballanoff, Yu and Stjernholm, 2004 p.132-133). One of the historically recognized records of BDM case is Cathy who was born in September 21, 1961 and eventually diagnosed with type 2 DM at the age of 20. Despite of different medical opinions and treatments on controlling her sugar levels, her blood sugar had continued to oscillate. In 1999, she had her child named, Sam, but her body rejected the baby during pregnancy due to severe diabetic complications. Things started going bad in the year 2000 as she was diagnosed with stroke and developed severe neuropathy on her feet.As the years passed by, she had experienced BDM complications, such as heart attack in 2002, leg venous blockage in 2003 that eventually ended in surgery, and complete irreversible neck vein blockage in 2005. In 2007, Cathy had a stroke that d estroyed almost all parts of her brain except for the remaining quarter piece of her brainstem. She lived for three days after the incident, and on May 22, 2007, Cathy’s body finally gave from the complications of BDM. ConclusionIn conclusion, BDM is indeed a rare but tremendously life-threatening condition. Considering the standard DM treatments available, Diagnosis and treatment are both hard to administer due to the unpredictable and extreme drops or rise of blood sugar in the body. The most common manifestations of BDM include severe hyperglycemia, hypoglycemia and ketoacidosis. If these conditions pursue, minor complications, such as polyuria, dehydration, thirstiness, etc, can lead to more severe conditions, such as hypertension, heart problems, diabetic coma, etc.To avoid these complications, medical experts had to suggest frequent blood sugar monitoring, diet restrictions and exercise. One of the recorded cases of severe BDM is the progressive diabetic complications o f Cathy. She first developed Type 2 DM indications at the age of 20. The doctors diagnosed her condition as BDM due to unpredictable and extreme rise of blood glucose levels. She was able to live a life of a common DM patient until her failed pregnancy in 2000, which eventually developed in severe BDM complications.She died on May 22, 2007 due to the massive stroke that nearly damaged her entire brain.
